Advice

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to MONITOR CONDITIONS for forecast damaging winds:

  • Sydney Coast
  • Wollongong
  • Nowra
  • Batemans Bay
  • Eden
  • Cooma
  • Bega

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises a vigorous coastal low has developed offshore of the southern NSW coast today, bringing damaging southerly winds to parts of southeastern NSW including the ACT and the Sydney coast. This may also bring blizzard conditions to alpine areas. Conditions will begin to ease later today and into early Saturday as the low moves further offshore.

DAMAGING SOUTHERLY WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely to develop over parts of the Snowy Mountains and South Coast from this morning, before spreading northwards into the remainder of the warning area during this afternoon. Wind gusts along the coastal fringe of the South Coast and Illawarra may reach 110 km/h during this afternoon.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are possible over the alpine areas above 1900 metres from this morning and into the afternoon.

BLIZZARD conditions are forecast over alpine areas above 1900 metres during this morning and into the early afternoon.

Conditions are expected to ease below warning thresholds throughout by late this evening or early Saturday morning.

A separate Coastal Hazard Warning for DAMAGING SURF is current. See https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts for details.

This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.
