Advice

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to STAY INFORMED about predicted minor flooding on the Culgoa River:

  • Low-lying areas of Brenda and surrounds

You should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and Facebook page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and checking the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises multiple flood peaks are causing minor flooding along the Culgoa, Birrie, and Bokhara Rivers. The main flood peak along the Culgoa River is now downstream of Brenda where minor flooding is continuing.

Upstream in Queensland, multiple flood peaks are occurring at Whyenbah along the Balonne and Culgoa rivers, and at Narran River TM along the Narran River. Renewed rises are also occurring at Woolerbilla along the Culgoa River. These rises may cause renewed or prolonged flooding along the Culgoa, Birrie, Bokhara and Narran Rivers in the coming days and weeks.

The situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.

Additionally, further rainfall is forecast across the catchment for the remainder of Wednesday into Thursday, which may cause small renewed rises depending on the timing and location of the heaviest falls. This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.

The Culgoa River at Brenda is currently above the minor flood level (4.90 m) at 4.94 metres and is expected to fall below the minor flood level on Thursday afternoon.
Renewed minor flooding is possible over the weekend.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by dangerous floodwaters:

  • Primary producers in low-lying areas should move livestock and equipment to higher ground.
  • Low-lying roads, bridges and causeways along the river and creeks.
  • Unsealed roads may become impassable.

What you need to do:

  • Never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in floodwater - it is dangerous, toxic, and may void your car insurance. If it's flooded, forget it. Fines may apply.
  • Consider the consequences of road and bridge closures and water over roads and make alternate arrangements for work, children, and travel.
  • Obey all signs about road closures and instructions from emergency services.
  • Avoid storm drains and pipes, ditches, ravines, creeks, and rivers.
  • People in areas likely to be impacted by flooding should raise their assets, including waste and chemical containers above expected flood heights.
  • If you have a Home or Business Emergency Plan, follow it. Otherwise, have a conversation and plan for what you will do and take with you if you need to evacuate.
  • Share this information with family, friends, and neighbours and help others prepare where possible.
  • If you are likely to be isolated due to flooding, stock up on essential items now.
  • Farmers should consider moving pumps and farm equipment to higher ground.
  • Companion animals and livestock should be relocated to higher ground that will not become an island.
  • The safest option is to evacuate as early as possible to avoid additional hazards. Do not wait until the last minute.
  • If you become isolated, notify NSW SES by calling 132 500
