What are we expecting?
The Bureau of Meteorology advises northwesterly winds will increase over the Snowy Mountains ahead of a trough sliding over southern parts of the state during Thursday evening and Friday morning.
Strong northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 90 km/h are possible about areas of the Snowy Mountains above 1500 metres during Thursday evening.
For ALPINE AREAS above 1900 metres, DAMAGING WINDS will increase to average between 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts up to 110 km/h during Thursday evening.
Winds are forecast to ease below warning thresholds by late Friday morning.
This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.
What you need to do:
- Trim trees and branches that could potentially fall on your home or property.
- Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
- Secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds.
- Prepare an emergency kit in case you lose power or need to leave your home.
- Ensure snow chains are carried in alpine areas.
- Monitor warnings issued by NSW SES on their website, HazardWatch and Facebook pages, the Hazards Near Me mobile app, local radio or television, and by following the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.
